In the wake of COVID-19 outbreak, entire mankind across the globe is suffering. Enhancing the body’s natural defence system (Immunity) plays an important role in maintaining optimum health. Recently the Ayush Ministry came out with protocols that list out easily doable things that improve health as well as immunity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared Ayurvedic tips, advised by Ayush Ministry and urged people to make it a part of their lives. “There are many things in the protocol that I myself have been diligently doing for years, such as drinking only hot water through the year. Let’s keep the focus on being healthy. After all, good health is the harbinger of happiness,” he wrote on Twitter.

We all know that prevention is better than cure. While there is no medicine for COVID-19 as of now, it will be good to take preventive measures which boost our immunity in these times. Ministry of Ayush recommends certain self-care guidelines for preventive health measures and boosting immunity with special reference to respiratory health. These are supported by Ayurvedic literature and scientific publications. Ayurveda, being the science of life, propagates the gift of nature in maintaining a healthy and happy living. It suggested various ways to enhance body’s natural defence system-

  • Drink warm water throughout the day,
  • Practise pranayama and meditation for at least 30 minutes,
  • Use haldi (turmeric), jeera (cumin), dhaniya (coriander) and lahsun (garlic) in cooking.

Measures To Promote Immunity

  • Take Chyavanprash 10gm (1tsp) in the morning,
  • Drink herbal tea/decoction (Kadha) made from Tulsi (Basil), Dalchini (Cinnamon), Kalimirchi (Black pepper), Shunthi (Dry Ginger) and Munakka (Raisin)- once or twice a day. Add jaggery (natural sugar) and/or fresh lemon juice to your taste, if needed,
  • Golden Milk– Half teaspoon Haldi (Turmeric) powder in 150 ml hot milk, once or twice a day.

Some simple Ayurvedic procedures for self-care during the coronavirus crisis.

  • Nasal application- Apply Sesame oil/ Coconut oil or Ghee in both the nostrils (Pratimarsh Nasya) in morning and evening.
  • Oil pulling therapy- Take 1 tablespoon Sesame oil or Coconut oil in the mouth. Do not drink, swish in the mouth for 2-3 minutes and spit it off followed by a warm water rinse. This can be done once or twice a day.
  • Steam inhalation with fresh Pudina (Mint) leaves or Ajwain (Caraway seeds) can be practised once a day.
  • Lavang (Clove) powder mixed with natural sugar/ honey can be taken 2-3 times a day. (It is better to consult a doctor if symptoms of dry cough and sore throat persist.)

In his ‘Mann ki baat’ radio programme, PM Narendra Modi said, “I am neither a fitness expert nor a medical expert. Practising Yoga has been an integral part of my life for many years and I have found it beneficial. I am sure many of you also have other ways of remaining fit, which you also must share with others.” He uploaded some Yoga asanas videos on social media and urged people to begin practising Yoga regularly.
